Our private practice serves the pediatric, adult and geriatric populations. Our center offers comprehensive assessment and treatment plans from licensed speech-language pathologists. We are dedicated to maximizing quality of life by treating communication through speech/articulation phonology, apraxia, fluency, reading/writing comprehension, auditory processing, ASD, cognitive deficits, dysphagia, dysarthria, aphasia among other developmental/acquired speech and language deficits. We provide therapy in our Lutherville and Parkton, Maryland offices and are available for “in home” treatment. Our center specializes in treatment of congenital, neurogenic and acquired speech and language, cognition, voice and swallowing impairments. We offer our treatments and assessments at competitive prices. Owner and practicing Speech Pathologist, Amy Schueler Dowell, M.S. CCC-SLP, has over 18 years of experience.
About Amy Schueler
Amy Schueler Dowell was born and raised on a farm, in Sykesville Maryland, where she lived with her parents and five siblings. She is one of a set of triplets and has three older siblings, two of whom are a set of twins. . She currently resides in Parkton, MD and is the proud mother to two boys , two dogs and two cats. Her father was a veterinarian, so Amy learned to love and care for animals from an early age.
As a child with a minor birth defect, Amy received several years of speech therapy. As an adolescent, she began to develop a keen sense of awareness of the sensitivities of others, having experienced them herself. She learned how to be strong in challenging or difficult times. She enjoyed rooting for the underdog, for those for whom life did not “come easy”.
While a student at Towson University, Amy decided that her desire to care for and help others would be best served in the field of speech language pathology (also known as speech therapy). She obtained her Masters in Speech-Language Pathology from Towson University in 1997 and was pleasantly surprised to gain employment in the field immediately upon graduation.
Since then, Amy has worked in a variety of settings including hospital, school, nursing home, home health and private practice. She has worked directly with patients and also in management positions. She has gained a plethora of knowledge, which she brings into each unique situation as it pertains to speech, language, cognition and swallowing disorders. However, along the way, she decided that being in management was depriving her of one on one contact with patients/clients.
After much personal introspection, Amy finally realized that her dream speech therapy job lay in private practice. There she could maintain meaningful and continuous relationships with both children and adults, allow the necessary time to meet the needs of those she served and provide services to diverse clients with diverse needs. She has been given the opportunity to make a positive impact on the life of a child or adult forever, to educate and empower individuals, parents and caregivers. Very few people get to experience how this “feels”!!!
Amy believes her experiences as a child dealing with psychosocial adversity truly led her to choose this career path. She can just as easily relate to a child experiencing communication difficulty or psychosocial adversity as she can listen to and help the adult who expresses their feelings about the changes impacting their life. She honestly believes her passion to help others is evident in her energy and enthusiasm in each of her sessions. She believes that brain fitness exercise coupled with physical fitness is key to keeping her balanced and in shape for what the world has to offer.
Most of the advice Amy gives, comes from her experiences receiving therapy, not giving it. Her best advice is that you use your resources, ask questions, and expect nothing but the best for your loved one. Your therapist should be able to confidently and competently explain and provide a sound rationale for their recommended treatment plan and include you in the development of that plan.

Sessions
Our treatment sessions last from 30 to 60 minutes one to three times a week. Our training programs are set up based on your individual needs.
Teletherapy
Spectrum Speech Therapy now offers Telepractice. Telepractice is the application of telecommunications technology to the delivery of speech therapy services at a distance by linking the therapist to the client. This allows for therapy to be conducted as an alternative to missing therapy sessions due to inclement weather, or in situations where travel is an issue.
MY MEMORY IS NOT THE SAME AS IT USED TO BE
Do you experience difficulty remembering to take your medications? Do you find that you cannot remember details of conversations that you had with friends? Do you have trouble remembering dates and times of appointments? If you answered yes to any of these questions, call our office to allow our speech-language pathologists to evaluate your memory and determine if you may benefit from therapy. Therapy for memory involves learning internal and external memory strategies to maintain and/or boost your recall.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically.
